Travel & Everyday · Ms. EvelyssWhat to Wear to Edinburgh's Hogmanay Street Party (Layers, Bag Rules and Boots)
Dress for up to five hours outside in Scottish winter weather: thermal layers, a warm jumper, a waterproof coat with a hood, hat, gloves and sturdy waterproof boots. Umbrellas are banned, bags must be no larger than A3, and there is no re-entry, so carry everything you need on your body.

“At Hogmanay, nobody will ever remember the shoes you nearly wore, only whether you could still feel your toes at the bells. Dress for the weather and let the party supply the glamour: a shimmer on the eye and a very good hat.”Her take
How cold is the Edinburgh Street Party?
Plan for cold, wet or windy conditions, and often all three. Late-December nights in Edinburgh are commonly low single figures, and they can feel colder when wind runs along Princes Street. For 31 December 2026, the official listing has gates opening at 8pm, last entry at 11pm and the event ending at about 12:50am, so you could be outside for nearly five hours.
That time matters more than the temperature. Walking around a Christmas market keeps you warm; standing still in a dense crowd doesn't. Check the forecast and the organisers' weather updates on 30 and 31 December, then pack for the worse end of it.
What should you layer for five hours outside?
Use three thin, warm layers and a coat you can open if the crowd warms you up. Avoid a single enormous jumper: you can't take anything off, and there may be nowhere to put it.
- Base: a long-sleeved thermal top and thermal leggings. Merino works well, or a soft thermal fabric if you find wool itchy.
- Middle: a fine jumper or a fleece, close-fitting enough to sit under your coat.
- Top: a warm knit, a fitted gilet or a padded layer for very cold nights.
- Outer: a long, waterproof coat with a generous hood and zipped pockets.
- Legs: dark, warm trousers or jeans over thermals. Waterproof overtrousers are worthwhile if heavy rain is forecast.
What can you carry, and what's banned?
Read the current rules on the official event site just before you travel, because they can change. At the time of writing, it says bags must be no larger than a sheet of A3 paper and umbrellas are not allowed. Glass is banned. Restricted items include glass, metal or hard-plastic bottles, and this extends to perfume. Bags and clothing may be searched on entry, and once you leave you can't get back in.
This is why your outfit needs to work as your wardrobe for the whole night. A small crossbody bag worn under the coat, or zipped pockets, is enough for your phone, card, key, lip balm, tissues and a small portable charger. Keep your phone charged for your e-ticket, and check which of the three entry gates is on your ticket, because it can't be changed. Decant anything essential into a soft, non-glass container and leave your perfume at the hotel.
Which boots and accessories are worth it?
The organisers advise sturdy footwear, so forget about heels. Choose waterproof boots with a deep tread and enough room for one thick sock. Tight boots restrict warmth, and crowded streets are no place for delicate shoes. Break them in before you travel if they're new.
A warm hat that covers your ears, a chunky scarf or snood, and gloves that work with your phone will make the biggest difference. Add a thin second pair of gloves if you really feel the cold. Stick-on heat pads can help but follow the instructions on the pack and keep them off bare skin.
How do you still look dressed up for New Year's Eve?
Do it above the collar, because that's the part you'll see in your photos. Wear statement earrings that won't catch on your scarf, a well-defined lip, and shimmer on the lid that you can apply at your accommodation. Set your hair in a braid or low bun so the hat sits well and the wind can't destroy it.
Choose a coat in a rich colour such as forest green, ink blue or camel if it's waterproof. A metallic beanie, a silk scarf tucked under your wool one, or a sparkling brooch on your coat all add something festive. Keep sequins away from your coat's zip or crossbody strap, as they'll snag.
What if you're going on somewhere afterwards?
Because of the no-readmittance rule, you can't drop anything off once you're inside. If you're going straight on to a party, wear your going-out top under your warmest layer and keep the jewellery in a zipped pocket until later.
Otherwise, plan for the walk home. Late-night transport can be busy, so keep some warmth and phone battery in reserve. A dry pair of socks in your coat pocket is a small but brilliant luxury after midnight.
Questions people ask
Can I wear heels to the Hogmanay Street Party?
I wouldn't. The organisers recommend sturdy footwear, and you'll be standing on a crowded street for hours in winter weather. Save your heels for a dinner beforehand.
Are umbrellas allowed at Edinburgh's Hogmanay?
No. The official FAQs say umbrellas aren't permitted, partly for safety and so that others can see. Wear a waterproof hooded coat instead.
What size bag can I take?
The FAQs say no larger than a sheet of A3 paper, 297mm by 420mm. Something much smaller is more comfortable, and a crossbody will stay put in a crowd.
Can I leave and come back to the Street Party?
No. There's a strict no-readmittance policy, so eat first, take what you need and wear everything you may want later.
Is a long coat better than a short jacket?
Usually, yes. A waterproof coat that covers your thighs shields more of you from wind and rain, and it's warmer when you're standing still.
The takeaway
Thin warm layers, waterproof coat with a hood, sturdy boots, a small bag no larger than A3, no umbrella, and everything you need on you from the start.
